The Driver

Name:
Vaughan Fletcher

DOB:
13.12.55

Occupation:
Self Employed Joiner and Builder

Location:
Chesterfield, Derbyshire

Races in:
Nippon Challenge

Car:
1997 Subaru Impreza RA

History:
Vaughan has been taking part in track days since 2002, with numerous high performance Japanese vehicles.

In 2004, Vaughan purchased his Type RA as a standard road car, with the intention of turning it into a dedicated track car. The car was upgraded as time and money allowed. Throughout 2007/8 Vaughan developed his Type RA Subaru from a road going saloon, to an accomplished track day regular.

In 2008, it was decided that he would take part in professional races, and so he sat his ARDS test, and the car’s development moved up a notch.

The car was initially developed by Vaughan, but the need for it to be race ready, meant that it needed certain expertise. As the ScoobyClinic are only a matter of minutes away from his home, and that they are the largest independent Subaru specialist in the UK, it was an easy choice.

Launched in 2004, the Euro Saloons Championship is for saloons, coupes and sports cars. The criteria being they should have been sold in the European Union at some time and there should be at least one road going example.

The championship provides a home for a wide variety of existing and purpose built competition machinery.

The championship has five classes, which consist of a mixture of vehicles built to the technical requirements of these three categories, sorted according to engine cubic capacity.

AAA Saloon Cup

AJEC Racing

Launched in 2010, the AAA Saloon Cup is a new race series for any “all wheel drive” car.

Based around the Wiltshire circuit of Castle Combe, the series travels around the UK, and takes in some of the better known circuits such as Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Oulton Park.

The series is made up of affordable road going AWD cars, and then adds a set of technical regulations which make racing fast, competitive and safe without going overboard on cost.

Ultimately the performance is limited by a compulsory weight limit of 1200kg and power limit of 400 bhp at the fly wheel. There is also an unlimited class which allows for the creation of the quickest saloon cars of all time!

Past race winners have included the Escort Cosworth of Nick Williamson, going to show it’s not all about Japanese makes running the show.

“AAA” aims is to bring this series into the public eye as much as possible, with each race appearing on Motors TV, and the addition of a celebrity guest driver in each round.

With a huge range of amateur and experienced drivers ranging between 19 and 70 years old and a very level playing field of exciting cars this promises to produce some of the best saloon racing of all time.
